This is a SpaceX initiative to create a global broadband network ideally suited for rural and hinterlands where internet connectivity is unreliable or nonexistent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Starlink technology uses a constellation of low Energy orbit (LEO) satellites to provide high-speed of up to 150 Megabits per second (Mbps) and low latency internet services. The satellite internet service provider offers three (3) internet packages &#8211; Starlink Internet, Starlink Business, and Starlink RV.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overview_Of_Starlink_Subscription_Plan_For_Nigerians\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overview Of Starlink Subscription Plan For Nigerians<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2024, Starlink increased its monthly subscription fee for the standard residential package from N38,000 to N75,000 &#8211; a 97.37% increase and also raised its hardware cost from N440,000 to N590,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The internet service provider blamed the rising inflation for the spike, stating that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to excessive levels of inflation, the Starlink monthly service price will increase from current rates to the respective rates below: Standard (Residential) N75,000; mobile \u2013 regional (roam unlimited): N167,000; mobile \u2013 global (global roam): N717,000).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These new prices that were supposed to take effect for old customers on October 31 elicited uproar in the telecommunication industry. Local operators accused the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) of a double standard for allowing Starlink to increase prices, which they could not do despite years of appeals to the regulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the NCC denied the approval of Starlink\u2019s price increment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request to the Commission seeking approval for price adjustment for which the Commission was yet to communicate a decision. The action of the company appears to be a contravention of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and Starlink\u2019s Licence Conditions regarding tariffs,\u201d the Commission stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCC\u2019s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, later announced that the Commission had begun pre-enforcement actions against Starlink for implementing price increments without the approval of the regulator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of these reactions, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starlink recently made a U-turn on its decision. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLast month, we increased the monthly service price for Starlink in Nigeria to account for inflation, helping us maintain operations and continue delivering reliable service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe remain committed to providing high-speed internet in Nigeria, but we need regulatory support to make the improvements necessary for a better customer experience.
