Did you know that the Starlink subscription is back to N38,000? Let’s catch the gist here. The satellite internet service owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk announced the temporary suspension of its recent price hike for Nigerian subscribers, attributing the decision to “regulatory challenges.”
What Is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite constellation system designed to deliver global internet coverage. This is a SpaceX initiative to create a global broadband network ideally suited for rural and hinterlands where internet connectivity is unreliable or nonexistent.
The Starlink technology uses a constellation of low Energy orbit (LEO) satellites to provide high-speed of up to 150 Megabits per second (Mbps) and low latency internet services. The satellite internet service provider offers three (3) internet packages – Starlink Internet, Starlink Business, and Starlink RV.
Overview Of Starlink Subscription Plan For Nigerians
In September 2024, Starlink increased its monthly subscription fee for the standard residential package from N38,000 to N75,000 – a 97.37% increase and also raised its hardware cost from N440,000 to N590,000.
The internet service provider blamed the rising inflation for the spike, stating that “Due to excessive levels of inflation, the Starlink monthly service price will increase from current rates to the respective rates below: Standard (Residential) N75,000; mobile – regional (roam unlimited): N167,000; mobile – global (global roam): N717,000).”
These new prices that were supposed to take effect for old customers on October 31 elicited uproar in the telecommunication industry. Local operators accused the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) of a double standard for allowing Starlink to increase prices, which they could not do despite years of appeals to the regulator.
However, the NCC denied the approval of Starlink’s price increment.
“We were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request to the Commission seeking approval for price adjustment for which the Commission was yet to communicate a decision. The action of the company appears to be a contravention of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and Starlink’s Licence Conditions regarding tariffs,” the Commission stated.
NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, later announced that the Commission had begun pre-enforcement actions against Starlink for implementing price increments without the approval of the regulator.
In light of these reactions, Starlink recently made a U-turn on its decision. The company said: “Last month, we increased the monthly service price for Starlink in Nigeria to account for inflation, helping us maintain operations and continue delivering reliable service.
“We remain committed to providing high-speed internet in Nigeria, but we need regulatory support to make the improvements necessary for a better customer experience. Without these approvals, our ability to continue delivering service is at risk,” Starlink added.
What The Suspension In Starlink Subscription’s Hike Means For Nigeria
1. Increased Accessibility
This revert to the initial N38,000 would enable more Nigerians to access high-speed internet, thereby bridging the digital divide and fostering economic productivity for businesses.
2. Improved Connectivity
Starlink’s reliable and fast internet features enable seamless communication, e-commerce, education, and remote work opportunities. In essence, this helps the efficiency of individuals and businesses that rely on a fast satellite internet service provider like Starlink for operations.
For instance, Nigeria is home to many crypto investors and traders who see this venture as one of the best ways to make money online. As such, an affordable and improved connection to the internet would enable traders to make quick trades following how the prices of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum can swing within the twinkle of an eye.
3. Competitive Advantage
Nigerian businesses and entrepreneurs can compete globally, using Starlink’s advanced technology to innovate and expand their enterprises. It is common knowledge that the world is gravitating towards advanced technology such as blockchain technology, generative AI (artificial intelligence), and whatnot. Therefore, Starlink’s subscription back to N38,000 would enable entities in various industries to use lightning-fast internet services such as Starlink for their operations and studies.
